In May of 2003 I joined the Speedway Fire Department in Speedway, IN, home of the Indianapolis 500. Speedway is a small town located within Indianapolis city limits. The department itself is a small 35 person department, with two houses. We currently operate with an engine company, a ladder company and a rescue squad. In 2008 I was promoted to Engineer. I am currently an Engineer on the squad on C shift.
In 2008 I discovered that my cholesterol levels were alarmingly high. Also around that same time, I was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition called a Chiari Malformation. I underwent brain surgery in January of 2009.
During my recovery I vowed to change my lifestyle and take my health very seriously. Since that time, I have lost almsot 45 lbs and effectively lowered my cholesterol 35%. Not only that, but I’ve discovered that a balanced, clean diet and regular exercise have helped or diminished many health issues including acid reflux, sinus issues, joint pain and even Chiari related symptoms.
I have since worked to help other people do the same. As a Peer Fitness Trainer (PFT) I am a certified personal trainer, with an IAFF endorsement to work with firefighters to prepare them to be fit for duty. I’ve also created fit2fightfire.com with plans for it to become a mult-dimensional resource for firefighter fitness and health.
